On April 25, 2017, Ella Fitzgerald would have been 100 years old. Ella 100! pays tribute to the Queen of Jazz and Lady of Song as part of the University of Rhode Island’ Black History month activities. The performance staged at the URI Paff Auditorium highlights Ella’s journey and collaborations as she overcame many obstacles to become the top female jazz singer for more than 50 years.
I have the privilege of being part of this wonderful mixed media experience as part of the jazz ensemble (guitarist) supporting storytelling/singer Cheryl Albright’s wonderful narrative.
I am also blessed to perform with long time collaborators and Paula Zeitlin Quintet alums Maggie Rizzi, bass; Bob Ponte piano & musical director; Greg Conroy, drums; along with new friend, the talented Carlos DeLeon trumpet, a Tito Puentes, Tito Rodríguez and Francisco “Machito” Grillo band alumni.
